The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) is an independent agency of the United States government. The SSA manages the United States’ social insurance program, consisting of retirement, disability, and survivors’ benefits. To qualify for these benefits, most American workers pay Social Security taxes on their earnings; future benefits are based on the employees’ contributions. The Presidential Management Fellows program was established by Executive Order in 1977. It is designed to attract to the federal service outstanding graduate students from a wide variety of academic disciplines who have an interest in, and commitment to a career in the analysis and management of public policies and programs.
